ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge is a milestone festival to be held biennially that makes accessible the work of the most innovative contemporary artists in the world. In 2006 it will be held in conjunction with the acclaimed 13th International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA). From August 7 - 13, San Jose will be the epicenter of North America for art and technology, with over 150 artists, a dozen exhibitions, symposia, workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, educational programs, an awards gala, nightly performances, and participants from more than 50 countries.
ZeroOne San Jose and ISEA2006 Director Steve Dietz, former curator of new media at the Walker Art Center, will discuss some of the highlights of the upcoming event, the rationale for an international arts festival in Silicon Valley, and the state of art and media in 2006.
From blogging pigeons to networking with paper cups and strings to singing squirrels to cell phone cinema to data operas to DIY biotech, ZeroOne San Jose will present a broad perspective on life and art at the beginning of the 21st century. Our lives are ubiquitously touched by technology but they are not defined by it. The specific art practices of many artists would not be possible without technology, but they are capable of being critical of it, and above all they are about how we live now.
