Research online

One of the greatest benefits of making collections, archive, and library information available online is that it allows members of the general public to easily look up information they might not otherwise have access to. To a large extent, this research consists of access to the collections databases.

At the National Museum of American Art, there is an online reference desk, and you can write open-ended questions to a "cybrarian," who will research them and either answer your questions or direct you to relevant resources.

The Asia Society's Reader's Guide to the Arts of Japan is an authoritative resource, which "features more than 450 annotations on the best publications on Japanese Art, is organized by both medium and period, and is fully searchable."

What do you need to know from a musuem? What tools do you need?
