Cybermuseuology
Taking the museum to the Net/bringing digital media to the museum
An online project curated by Steve Dietz for the Museo de Monterrey, Mexico
April 28, 1999
In 1999 I was asked by the Museo de Monterrey to "curate" an online "exhibition" that would explore and explain some of the issues surround online art and museums. More polemic than exhibition, I called the project Cybermuseology. Museo de Monterrey closed several years ago, but I recently found the files for the project. In the actual version produced for them, the final files must have been deleted, as they are unfinished here. Many of the links are broken, of course, and I may fix them one day. For now, it seems good enough to have found the files. Six years on, the fundamental distinction between online art and art online seems still valid, but the debate may have moved on from this "obvious" distinction to the issue of a distinctive art or "just art."
